Butterfly Fairies Handmade Necklaces

Posted on March 31st, 2010 in News, necklaces

When I was in Primary 3 at the age of 9, I received my first Enid Blyton Storybook called the Book of Brownies from my father. This book ‘changed’ my life cos it transforms me into a Bookworm. From then on, books, especially fairytale ones from Enid Blyton occupied most of my spare time.

The thing is we didn’t have much spare $ to indulge in books then.  I still remember going to bookshops in those old emporiums in Upper Serangoon Road, pesturing my mum to buy me 1 more book. But, I remember seeing her look on her face and stop pestering her. It was a “I would love to buy you 1 more book but we need the $ for food” look.

Also, I didn’t receive much allowance from my parents then. In fact, I remember going to school everyday with only 50 cents in my pocket. In those days, you could still have a small bowl of noodles for 20 cents, I think. So, I saved the remaining 30 cents, so I can add 1 more Enid Blyton story book to my collection. Each book (other than the 1st) reminded me of all my savings and till now, I still have most of the story books! Haha..can you imagine the books being more than 20 years old already!

Of the many books I have with me, the following are my favourites:

Book of the Brownies

The Wishing Chair I & II

The Enchanted Woods

The Adventurous Four

The Twins at St Claire’s

The Naughtiness Girl in School

What about you? Are you also a lover of Enid Blyton books? Do you still have them with you? What are your favourites?

My current collection of handmade necklaces is thus an inspiration from Enid Blyton’s fairytale fairies - magical butterfly fairies. View more photos of these awesome handmade necklaces with my self made fairy pendants in my online shop. Hopefully, they will all fly to their lovely homes soon.  You can also email me at jewelryoflav@gmail.com for enquiries.

Vintage Inspired Handmade Jewelry

Posted on March 27th, 2010 in Bracelets, News

Retro and vintage jewelry has been the rage for quite a while already and I would say many fashionistas are loving it, including yours truly.  Of course, to own real jewelry from the past, you could either inherit them from your mommy or granny if they have a huge collection of gems and jewelry (especially if they were also jewelry loving fashionistas in their era) or you could buy them.

However, buying real vintage jewelry may be costly and they are not so easy to find since you might not be able to ascertain its origins. The next best option would be to look for vintage or retro inspired ones, especially those that are handmade and come in limited quantity. You might be able to find many vintage or retro inspired costume jewelry in shopping malls but I guess, mass production just isn’t my cup of tea. I believe many of you would also prefer rare pieces or very limited ones too.

So, I thought, why not create some limited edition vintage inspired jewelry? I especially love those pin up girls from the 1940s-1950s given their quirkiness and a little bit of naughtiness.  Thus, two vintage inspired bracelets, featuring pin up girls in self made pendants together with pretty gemstones and swarovski crystals are made.  If they are well-liked, I might make more jewelry featuring different pin up girls :)

Alice in Wonderland Handmade Jewelry

Posted on March 25th, 2010 in Earrings, News

Watching Alice in Wonderland has been a delightful and thought provoking experience for me.  In particular, when the Mad Hatter told Alice, “You have lost your muchness”, it sets me thinking.

What exactly is this “muchness” that Alice has lost? Her true self? What is her true self? Has she become so lost in the adult world of set societal norms, gender obligations and rules that she has forgotten who she really is? Her journey of self discovery also points to the fact that many of us have perhaps also lost our “muchness”, wondering who we are, what we are doing, why we are doing what we are doing, is this what we really want to do? Of course, eventually, Alice found herself - to continue to believe in the impossible for her life as she believes in 6 impossible things as she slays the jabberwocky:

1. There is a drink that makes you shrink
2. There are cakes that make you grow
3. Cats can disappear
4. Animals can talk
5. There is a place called Wonderland
6. I can slay the Jabberwocky

Predictably, Alice found her “muchness” in her victory against the Jabberwocky.

Have you lost your “muchness” too? Perhaps, you can regain it by thinking up your list of 6 impossible things and share them here? Let me think about mine too. :)

In the meantime, do check out my newly made earrings inspired by Alice and view more photos of them in my online shop:
